Keeping it real?

Reality television, a section of the TV schedule dedicated to showcasing the lives of us ordinary citizens. In this day and age, we have hundreds of different reality genres, like music/talent, love/heartbreak and even the night-life of a few drunkards.

The genre began in earnest in the early to mid 1990s with The Real World. It then exploded as a phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global success of the series Survivor and Big Brother.

Since then, we have the likes of The X Factor, started in September 2004 with celebrity judges; Simon Cowell, Sharon Osborn and Louis Walsh. Nine years on and it’s still going strong with new judges and even harder challenges. Or is it?

As the show goes on, there are more and more claims that the show’s producers have been fixing votes in favour of the most controversial acts in order to boost ratings. In the 2012 show there was a major bust up between the producers and the viewers.

Louis chose to save Carolynne, but then took the vote to deadlock as Rylan Clark went through. After the decision, Carolynne’s mentor Gary Barlow stormed off, devastated Carolynne said she is ‘very cross’ about the situation, and won’t be auditioning for The X Factor again.

After Louis initially told host Dermot O’Leary he wanted Carolynne to go through to next week’s show over controversial Essex contestant Rylan Clark, he then backtracked and shouted that he wanted to take the vote to deadlock.

Louis’ last-minute change of heart caused outrage among viewers, with many pointing out that he was spotted chatting to the show’s executive producer Richard Holloway during Carolynne’s sing-off – prior to the judges’ decision on who should go home.

So, is reality TV real anymore, with rumours saying that even the likes of reality TV show Geordie Shore being scripted? Have your say in the below poll and leave your comments in the comment section.

With X Factor back this year, so is the fix rumours: Sensationally claiming X Factor rigged the voting to make her go because she was ‘a threat’ to the other hopefuls who all made it through to next week’s show, she also blamed her exit on her styling.

‘I’ve had issues with this all along,’ she said. ‘I wanted to talk to Sharon about the styling but she was too busy.’

But despite Sharon’s apparent no-shows when Lorna needed her, the 26-year-old says Mrs O still ensured she was controlling Lorna’s wardrobe.
